GAD / PERSON PROFILE

David Chipperfield

Public buildings shaped by continuity, restraint and historical responsibility.

Background & practice

Chipperfield founded his London practice in 1985 after working with Douglas Stephen, Norman Foster and Richard Rogers. Museum projects, renovations and new civic buildings developed alongside a wider concern for the quality of the public realm.

How to read the work

The Neues Museum distinguishes surviving fabric, reconstruction and new additions. Architecture supports the life and memory of a place without requiring every element to compete for attention.

Professional recognition

2023 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate.

Attribution note

These works appear in his Pritzker record; they were realised by practice teams and collaborators.
