Danske Bank Headquarters: a bank with routes through it
Lundgaard & Tranberg combines a brick city frontage with public connections and a workplace organised around atria.

Brick holds the street; glass opens the entrance
Two red-brick buildings connect the headquarters visually to Copenhagen’s surrounding masonry blocks. At the entrances, the frontage changes to glass. The contrast is useful: a large workplace can belong to the street without making every part of its envelope identical. The photographs establish the completed exterior and its threshold spaces; the interior organisation is described in the architects’ project record.
Public space has specific entrances
The bank identifies a publicly accessible portion of the food court and a cafe reached from the internal walkway or the external stair between the buildings. This gives openness an address and a route. It is more convincing to examine these defined destinations than to equate a transparent facade with unrestricted access. The office remains a workplace with different access conditions beyond those shared spaces.
Different kinds of work occupy different edges
The architects place quieter work near the facade and shared activity nearer the atrium. The arrangement suggests a gradient between daylight-facing concentration and the visibility of colleagues across the building. It offers a useful alternative to distributing every desk in the same way. Its success depends on the acoustic and circulation relationships between zones; the plan alone does not demonstrate how employees experience them.
A headquarters is one phase of a district
Danske Bank’s new address took effect on 1 April 2024. Its move announcement described Postbyen as a district still developing, while the architect lists the project period as 2015–2024. The headquarters should therefore be read within a continuing urban transformation. Its completed brick frontage does not prove that all neighbouring housing, landscape and transport connections were finished at the same time.
