GAD / PERSON PROFILE

Renzo Piano

A builder’s attention to light, components and how public buildings work.

Background & practice

Born into a family of builders in Genoa, Piano studied in Milan. Collaboration with Richard Rogers produced the Centre Pompidou; later work through Renzo Piano Building Workshop developed a varied language for museums and civic buildings.

How to read the work

Construction details and technical invention shape the visitor’s experience. Lightness is pursued through the assembly of parts rather than a single repeated visual style.

Professional recognition

1998 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate.

Attribution note

The Centre Pompidou was a collaboration with Rogers and an extensive engineering and design team.
