GAD / PERSON PROFILE

Kengo Kuma

Materials and texture mediating between buildings and their surroundings.

Background & practice

Kuma established Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990. His practice and writing investigate relationships between nature, technology and human experience, with projects ranging from small buildings to major cultural institutions.

How to read the work

V&A Dundee translates the image of coastal cliffs into layered concrete. A passage through the building reconnects the city and waterfront, giving material expression a public purpose.

Attribution note

The museum credits Kuma and his practice; the design should not be read as individual construction delivery.
