Designing a community begins with understanding how people live. In Dongziguan, field research and conversations with residents informed the architectural response.
Four basic dwelling types were combined to create variation across the settlement. Rooflines, shared spaces and materials connect contemporary needs with the character of rural Jiangnan.
The project offers a way of thinking about housing as a collective place: a relationship between individual homes, neighbours and the landscape around them.
