Robert Venturi, FAIA, and Denise Scott Brown, Hon. FAIA

The 2016 AIA Gold Medal recipient record names Robert Venturi, FAIA, and Denise Scott Brown, Hon. FAIA. Robert Venturi studied at Princeton and continued his education as a Rome Prize Fellow before teaching architectural theory. His 1966 book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture argued for richness and ambiguity in the built environment rather than a narrow pursuit of unity.

Alejandro Aravena

The 2016 Pritzker Architecture Prize recipient record names Alejandro Aravena. Alejandro Aravena graduated from the Universidad Católica de Chile in 1992 and established his own practice in 1994. Since 2001 he has led ELEMENTAL, which works on housing, public space, infrastructure and transport with an emphasis on social impact. Its work includes reconstruction planning for Constitución after Chile's 2010 earthquake and tsunami.
