GAD / PERSON PROFILE

Tadao Ando

Concrete walls that make light, wind and movement tangible.

Background & practice

Ando developed his practice in Osaka through independent study and close observation of buildings. Houses, museums and places of worship became settings for his investigation of enclosed space and the natural world. He received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995.

How to read the work

Simple geometry establishes a strong boundary; changing daylight and carefully placed openings animate the interior. The route into a room matters as much as its final shape.

Professional recognition

1995 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate.

Attribution note

Church of the Light appears in the prize foundation’s selected works for Ando; design involved his architectural practice.
