Ramon Vilalta graduated from ETSAV in 1987 and established RCR Arquitectes in Olot with Rafael Aranda and Carme Pigem in 1988. The trio's early lighthouse competition proposal helped shape a continuing interest in the underlying purpose of architectural types. Their practice grew from Catalan commissions into work elsewhere in Europe while keeping place central to its ideas. All three founders shared the 2017 Pritzker Prize.
