Oscar Niemeyer studied at Rio de Janeiro's Academy of Fine Arts and developed a sculptural approach to architecture. He collaborated with Lucio Costa on the Brazilian Pavilion for the New York World's Fair and took part in the team working on Rio's Ministry of Education and Health. Appointed chief architect of Brasília in 1956, he designed buildings that complemented Costa's overall urban plan, making structural form central to the capital's architectural identity.
