John Scott's architectural work was closely connected to Hawkes Bay, where he spent much of his professional life. His houses reworked the New Zealand farmhouse tradition, while buildings such as Our Lady of Lourdes and Futuna Chapel brought light, materials and cultural relationships into powerful spatial compositions. The NZIA's 1999 citation pays tribute to an architect who died in 1992, recognising the continuing influence of his built legacy.
