Dave Strachan entered architecture after working as a self-taught builder and studying at the University of Auckland. He later returned to university for advanced study in sustainable design and participated in Glenn Murcutt's International Master Class. The NZIA's 2020 Gold Medal citation connects his design work with knowledge of construction, environmental awareness, teaching and mentoring, presenting these activities as complementary parts of his professional contribution.
