Arata Isozaki studied architecture at the University of Tokyo and worked under Kenzo Tange before establishing his own practice in 1963. His early projects included the Ōita Prefectural Library and the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma. The devastation he witnessed in wartime shaped his interest in how cities could be rebuilt. Rather than maintain one fixed style, he treated change as a response to successive architectural problems.
